Eligibility Criteria
At Deeper Learning Virtual Academy, learning is not optional. We expect all students to participate regularly in their curriculum and instruction. However, we recognize that virtual education is not for everybody. In order to ensure that students are placed in the appropriate educational setting to meet their needs, DLVA maintains a set of eligibility criteria that hold students accountable for their participation in our program.
More details can be found in the student handbook, but below is the general outline for how our eligibility criteria work.
- Students entering DLVA are subject to a participation agreement requiring parent/guardian consent to the eligibility criteria. In other words, meeting the eligibility criteria is a condition of enrollment at DLVA.
- According to our Strong Start policy, students have 15 school days from their start date to demonstrate that they are on track to complete all of their assigned courses on time.
- Students who fail to meet this goal are either a.) transferred out of DLVA or b.) kept enrolled after a family conference reviewing the eligibility criteria.
- Students who are transferred out are sent back a week from the date the Strong Start conference took place.
- Following successful completion of the Strong Start period, students must be on track or ahead in their academic progress or they will be considered in violation of the eligibility criteria. In other words, the primary eligibility criteria for remaining enrolled at DLVA are that each student remain on track or ahead in all coursework each week.
- Students not meeting the eligibility criteria get letters sent home to the parent/guardian for each 5-day period that they fail to met the criteria, per state statute.
- After two letters, students not meeting eligibility criteria are discussed in an all-staff roundtable. If the staff decides that a third letter should be sent, the sending of that letter constitutes grounds for removing the student from enrollment at DLVA.
- Students return to their in-person school a week from the date that the third letter is sent.
- If a student is removed from DLVA due to failure to meet eligibility criteria and later seeks to re-enroll at DLVA, that student must first provide documentation demonstrating one full year of academic success at their previous school. In this case, academic success means that the student has earned no less than 60% (D-) in all of their assigned courses for that year.
